About this Webinar:
Family Based Treatment (FBT) offers parents and caregivers hope as an evidence-based treatment for adolescents suffering from an eating disorder. However, there are situations which make benefitting from FBT alone complicated.
Loved ones with an eating disorder who also suffer from concurrent anxiety, depression or substance use disorders, those with greater emotional dysregulation (e.g., anger and aggression), or those who engage in suicidal/self-injurious behaviors may represent a form of the illness that practitioners consider “difficult to treat” -- and in treating their symptoms, FBT alone may not “be enough.”
In addition, parents and caregivers may feel unable to provide FBT without more support or training for themselves. They wonder, “how can I get her to eat when she screams at us for hours at a time?”
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is an approach designed for the “hard-to-treat” patient and can be a viable adjunct to FBT for treating eating disorders. In this webinar, Dr. Wisniewski will explore the effectiveness and feasibility of integrating DBT with FBT. The FBT-DBT approach calls for an innovative combination of strategies well-established in the successful use of FBT for the management of eating problems as well as DBT in the treatment for emotion dysregulation.
This webinar will discuss for whom this model may be appropriate and in which ways FBT and DBT are complementary treatments.
